Earlier this month Google announced the latest version of Google Chrome Version 62, which will be rolling out over the next few days – if not done already as we send out this newsletter.

The browser is putting pressure on website owners to migrate to HTTPS. Essentially for any websites that have online shops, contact forms and/or forms. Visitors visiting these types of website will get a ‘Not Secure’ warning displayed on a HTTP page.

Previously, Chrome displayed the warning if it detected any forms on the website that transmit data such as credit card information. Version 62 now shows the warning on all HTTP pages that include forms of any kind. Eventually Google will role this out to all HTTP sites and display the ‘Not Secure’ warning.

It’s important to take this on board as the majority of visitors use Google Chrome, for example in August 2017, 76.9% of visitors used Google Chrome as their browser.

It’s something to take on board as it will start to affect all website owners at some point or another, so it’s something to be weary about if and when you receive feedback from customers with this warning when they visit your site.

Pencil and Coffee can add HTTPS to all our customers websites for a yearly licence of £49.99. If you want to find out more information then let us know. Or if you want us to test if your site displays the ‘Not Secure’ warning then we can check that too.
